The Lost Sector was designated to drop Helmets. We just got lucky like you. You can run them in a fireteam but exotics only drop on solo clears. You can get exotics, but they will not be that days slot specific nor does it have bad luck protection. To get slot specific and get guaranteed new items you have to run solo.

His experience is mine, many others with whom I play, and the general consensus in this sub. Score, no. Well not exactly. If you don't kill all champions and get a "platinum" score you absolutely won't get an exotic. If you do get "platinum" it's a 25% or 33% drop rate for legend or master respectively. The actual number score doesn't matter though. If I were to take a wild guess I'd say drop rate is 1 in 5 to 1 in 10.
One day I ran lost sectors 5 times and got to exotics. The other day I ran it 30 times to finally get one. If you can do the master one then your chances are much better in getting that drop. If you can't then be prepared to grind it if you really want that exotic. You can going for exotics till daily reset.

Even if it doesn't show up as possible rewards, it does still drop exotics (shitty rng of course). I think you need yo be above 1800 for the Legend LS to show.
